    You might do better with acetone as a solvent. Don’t use it in a non-ventilated space though.

    Going from my personal experience, I suspect that these sort of recommended systems may work well for source and amplification, but speakers are another story. No only because different people like different sound, but because of the need to match room to speaker. For example, I have a pair of Dali Oberon 5s which Phil mentions here as a good but slightly out of budget alternative to the AE 109s, and in my normal listening room they sound very good. But I have experimented moving the whole system into a larger room (nearer to the size Phil mentions here) and they sounded very thin, and it quickly went back to the original room!

    Yes, I'm 57 and have the CS505-2 Deluxe on the right which I bought as a student in 1986 (You could buy the -2 with the plastic plinth too but I paid the extra for the wooden/ black ash vinyl plinth. Swapped out the Ortofon cartridge for a Goldring GX1020 which was a great improvement. It's under my bed now with 'issues'.

    Simple Vinyl system. Takes me back to Oct 1986 as a student when I invested my Summer job money on a system from Sevenoaks HiFi. Dual CS505-2 Deluxe, Rotel RA820BX, AR18BX. Later on the first upgrade I made was to swap out the Ortofon cartridge for a Goldring G1010, made a huge difference not bettered until I bought Royd Minstrels. Always chasing the next upgrade!

    Hi Phil nice vid. when I was looking at a stereo system for the front room (UK) I tried a couple of what were very well regarded floorstanders but they just overwhelmed the room so tested some bookshelf speakers and ended up with a pair of Quad's sounded great. So would always recomend someone tested at home before jumping in thinking biggest is best. Keep the vid's coming

    Vinyl is really not budget. DACs much more bang for the buck and sounds much better nowadays in the budget category, vinyl takes a life of its own with better tables and expensive carteidges. Thats not budget territory. Easier to use tubes on Dacs ie preamp/amp and high efficiency speakers.

    • @kristofvadnai7468
      @kristofvadnai7468 6 годин тому

      Not true. My P2 with Goldring E3 and tube phono stage easily sounds as good as my more expensive and very good digital front end. Depends on the record too.

    • @francisdelacruz6439
      @francisdelacruz6439 2 години тому

      @kristofvadnai7468 You may really like the analog sound but vinyl at the high end is closer to digital you get a black background and little pops scratches if any with dynamics with all the benefits of analog. Great you can fully appreciate budget gear. In my case I find vinyl distortions too glaring in the budget gear. Try tube pre and amps with good Dacs you will find it also nice plus you have the convenience of streaming all the music you could think of! If your on a budget vinyl is also expensive to buy all those records but personally I find vinyl better but appreciate Dacs with tubes in the system acceptable even budget Dacs in a high resolution high end system. Cheers.

      You can mix and match. If a dealer had in his/her trade in stock say a P6 then being able to stretch your source components level of performance by purchase that with a warrenty would pay dividends. Doesn't alter the basic rightness of what is being suggested for this scenario.

    I've got an 8000a from the '80s, recently refurbished. Very happy with it but I do think it depends on what speakers it's used with. Currently B&W DM220s and it sounds bad. With Kef KK3s and BBC LS35a sounds sublime. Just my opinion and that's all that matters to me, especially with my hearing aids!

    Moving Coil is better than Moving Magnet. Why? Because, as you predicted, the coils at the end of the cantilever are flexible at the MC cartridge the stylus moves more easily on the surface of the vinyl giving it a better sound. The Moving Magnet cartridge,, magnets at the end of the cantilever, because of their weight, the needle moves not so elastically and the sound is not very wow. Moving Magnet is cheaper also because you change the needle every day, not the whole assembly as with Moving Magnet. There is also a retipped version that makes it possible to replace the needle on the Moving Coil cartridge. I had Moving Magnet, good cartridge such as Ortofon Super OM with Fritz-Geiger needle, a more advanced Shibata. Then I decided to make a change, I bought a MC Denon DL110 cartridge for 50 euros with a destroyed stylus and I retipped it with the 40 needle from Ortofon and it sounds liike a dream. A much better sound. I also bought a cartridge Akai PC 200, AT30e clone with elliptical nude needle that sounds better than any MM cartridge. I also bought an AT30e gold 1983 cartridge to which I put a VM95ml, microline needle and it also sounds extremely good, surpassing a MM cartridge

    The only people who think logically cables can't make a difference are those who don't actually understand how electricity works. Electricity is not electrons flowing like water in a pipe, electricty is propagation of an electromagnetic field through a conductor that completes a circuit. The electromagnetic field is generated by the surface of the conductor and very much affected by the dielectric material around the conductor. Your power cable is not the last meter of some delivery system, it's an extension of the primary winding of your component's power supply

    I love the idea of borrowing some of the design flourishes from the Aethos- definately prefer the buttons on the newer ElexR. I have had the 3 version for 8 years now. I made the criticism that it was not a value proposition in North America - mostly because of tax and dealer cost, etc. But I have changed my mind this past year because it has worked so incredibly well , because I love it's simplicity and it's forgiving nature. I will be very sad when the day arrives when I have to replace it. It has given me much more than I ever expected.

    Hi Phil As a subscriber, good to meet up with you briefly in Cranage on Saturday. I was the guy with the Rega t shirt (Not from Rega, but available online, and I also have a Linn one from the same company!) Interesting stuff at the show, and as I mentioned to you, impressed by how engaging the budget Rega set up was in the 'starter system' room, for those wishing to get an audio set up, fit and forget, and not worry about upgrading. If I'd done that, would have saved a fortune, but still appreciate the difference provided by my Klimax level Linn LP12, plus Aethos, plus PMC twenty five23i speakers. Hope to hear your take on which of the rooms were the most successful in your opinion. Oddly didn't like the `Cyrus demo, but it could have been the poor streamed source. Really enjoyed the direct cut demonstration in the Chasing the Dragon room. Did you manage to hear that demonstration? regards. R
